Three girls, Joy Ferbian, 20, Rebecca
Stephen, 23 and
Rebecca Stephen,
20 on Thursday [Aug 30] appeared before a Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court charged
with belonging to a gang of thieves.
The accused persons, who reside at
Rukuba Road area of Jos, appeared before Chief Magistrate Talatu Gada, on a one-count charge of belonging to a gang of thieves.
According to police prosecutor, Ado Ali, the trio are being tried for
roaming about aimlessly in the middle of the night.
Ali told the
court that the accused were arrested by a police patrol team, led by ASP Christopher Okeke on Aug. 24, at
about 2.00 a.m. around West of Mines an area notorious for thefts and all
manners of crimes in Jos.
“In that particular area in Jos,
criminals snatch peoples’ property at odd hours”, he said. Ali alleged that during police
investigation, the suspects could not give satisfactory explanation about what
they were doing at that time in that place.
“My Lord the accused failed to give
concrete explanation, as to why they were still outside at that odd hour”, he
told the court.
The prosecutor alleged that the
accused had committed an offence contrary to section 305 of the Penal Code. The
accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charge and applied to the court for
bail.
The Judge granted them bail in the
sum of N50,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.
OPINION:
…funny. For roaming about aimlessly in the middle of the night + Failure to give concrete explanation = one-count charge of belonging
to a gang of thieves. Does this jive at all?…
