Gunfire and explosions broke out in the troubled northeastern Nigerian city of Damaturu on Saturday [June 30], shortly after a dusk-to-dawn curfew came into force, residents said.

“Explosions and gunshots have been going on in this neighbourhood for over an hour”, said Abdullahi Musa, a civil servant. “We still don’t know what the target is because the shooting started shortly after curfew”, he added.

MILITARY PENSION SCAM: Court Jails Bricklayer For Two Years

Justice Musa Sale Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, Yola, Adamawa State, has sentenced Papa Haziel (22), a bricklayer to two years imprisonment for fraudulently obtaining the sum of N1, 222,316:56 from Military Pension Board under false pretence.

Haziel was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial crimes Commission, EFCC. Haziel, who was arraigned on a two count charge, was sentenced without an option of fine. The sentence is however to run consecutively. The accused, who is a bricklayer, was alleged to have claimed to be the son of a retired military officer, Mr. Vatau Haziel, and forged documents with which he had been drawing money from the Military Pension.

Hill, 37, a hip hop singer and rapper best known as a former member of the Fugees and for a Grammy-winning 1998 solo album, pleaded guilty to failing to file federal returns between 2005 and 2007, despite earning an income of more than $1.8 million primarily from film and recording royalties.

Each count carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Court Stops President Goodluck Jonathan From Renaming UNILAG

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos today [June 25] granted an interim order restraining the Federal Government from renaming the University of Lagos. The order was granted by Justice Stephen Adah, while ruling in the suit brought against the May 29, 2012 renaming of the institution by the students and alumni of the University of Lagos.

The court, however, advised the litigants to harmonise the suits into one and adjourned further hearing till 4July 2012.

Law enforcement agents and travellers were last week astonished when 66 wraps of narcotics, which tested positive to methamphetamine, were discovered in the private part of Mande Bala, 48, at the screening section of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on June 15, 2012.

The lady was promptly arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency shortly before she was due to board a Kenyan Airways flight to Nairobi.
