Rio Ferdinand believes Arsenal and Liverpool will be the two teams who will miss out on the top four this season. Arsene Wenger’s side slipped to fifth place following their 3-1 defeat at Anfield on Saturday evening, with Liverpool moving into third.

Manchester United, meanwhile, passed up the chance to gain more ground as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth at Old Trafford. But Ferdinand believes Jose Mourinho’s side have enough to make the Champions League places.

‘I think it will be Arsenal and Liverpool who miss out,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport. ‘The problem is, all the teams we’ve mentioned have an inconsistency.’

United are three points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who travel to Sunderland on Sunday, and Ferdinand feels Mourinho can inspire the team after the setback against Bournemouth.

‘They’ve got into a groove and a mentality, and a way of winning,’ said the former England captain. ‘Today they drew, but they’ve got their hands on a trophy. ‘I still think Jose Mourinho will be able to pick them up and re-align that. I think the most important think to United is Zlatan Ibrahimovic.’
