Mary Esther Were, 27, said many Americans preferred Hillary Clinton inviting jeers from the audience.
She ended her answer by saying that Mr Trump had unified the country angering many more who had been protesting against Mr Trump's travel ban which targets people from seven mainly Muslim countries - three of them in Africa.
Mr Trump was the co-owner of the Miss Universe pageant before selling it in 2015. Miss France was crowned the 2017 winner at the pageant in Manila, Philippines.
Twitter users said that she had been given the most difficult question:
#MissUniverse every other person got asked about their country but to #MissKenya you ask about Trump? ARE YOU SERIOUS!!— Ro-ka-dok (@2pmkhunrok) January 30, 2017
#Miss Kenya what kind of question was that? why is her question different from the others? well, she is worthy of the #MissUniverse #crown— 🎄☃🐶🐱holly🐱🐶☃🎄 (@flothilde) January 30, 2017
Why was Miss Kenya's question about Trump? I thought you said these questions were relevant for all the contestants...? #MissUniverse— Madi Stamper (@MadiStamper) January 30, 2017
I'm so mad at the #MissUniverse competition for asking Miss Kenya about Trump. USA is not her country. That's not fair.— amaya (@amayamarillo) January 30, 2017
#MissUniverse why did they have to ask Miss Kenya about Trump... i feel bad for her. She could have won if she was asked a better question— Peachy Jaehyun (@peachydimples_) January 30, 2017
