Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud played down his wonder goal against Crystal Palace by claiming he was lucky to score an outrageous ‘scorpion kick’. The Frenchman converted Alexis Sanchez’s cross with an acrobatic finish after the 30-year-old started a good team move from the halfway line.

Giroud’s goal was reminiscent of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s against Sunderland on Boxing Day but it is surely the goal of the season so far. However, the humble forward was quick to play down his goal and said he was lucky to convert Sanchez’s cross after Arsenal’s 2-0 win.

‘Alexis gave me the ball behind me and I tried to take it with my back heel and I had maximum luck,’ Giroud told Sky Sports.

‘I was not in good balance so it was a great feeling you know. I wanted to score from the first minutes with Nacho’s cross but I was a bit short and thank god I succeeded with a nice one for the team. ‘I tried to deflect it [the cross]. In this position you can’t do anything else so I was lucky and its nice for me and the team. It’s my best one.’
