At least 35 people have been killed after a gunman opened fire in a nightclub in Istanbul, according to the governor of Istanbul.
Another 40 have been injured after the man attacked revellers celebrating New Year’s Eve while wearing a Santa Claus outfit, according to CNN Turk.
Governor Vasip Sahin described the incident at the Reina nightclub in the Besiktas area of the city as a terrorist attack.
Some party-goers leapt into the nearby Bosphorus strait to escape the shooter, and efforts are ongoing to rescue them from the water.
The current location of the gunman is unknown, but police special forces are preparing an operation to enter the building, CNN Turk said.
At least six ambulances have been called to the scene, as well as police.
Initial reports suggested two men had stormed the nightclub.
