A 4-year-old nursery II pupil was reported dead after a block of classrooms at Monsil Nursery and Primary school Kado, Life Camp, Abuja collapsed on him Wednesday morning. The incident happened during break time when pupils were out for breakfast.
Sources said the child was taken to Gwarinpa General Hospital where he was confirmed dead. He was said to be sitting in front of a classroom watching his peers play during break hours when part of the mud building collapsed on him.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Life Camp, Muhammad Rabiu, who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust reporter said the proprietor of the school, Mr. Uba Ogbonnah, has been arrested over the incident.
When Daily Trust visited the school shortly after the incident, it was under tight security as armed policemen took guard to prevent any breakdown of law and order by angry youth in the neighbourhood who were threatening to burn down the school.
The FCT Director of Quality Assurance Department, Mr. Ayuba Dedam and Municipal Zonal Education Officer, Mrs. Comfort Gani, who visited the school criticised the proprietors for placing more premium on economic gains over the lives of children.
Mrs Gani expressed shock over the collapse, saying the school was sealed off about a month ago before the FCT schools resumed for the new academic year and was surprised that it reopened in defiance to the official directive.
