This is the first picture of a teenage girl who was forced into an arranged marriage at the age of 14 then died in labour. Known only as Derya B, she was 15 when she gave birth, but because of complications related to giving birth so young she suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage.
She gave birth in a village in the Mukti district of Turkey but then complained of nausea and headaches. That’s when she was taken to hospital in Batman where she was put in intensive care. Doctors kept her there after diagnosing the brain haemorrhage but she died on Thursday.
Prosecutors in Turkey have now launched an investigation into her death. She married her husband when she was just 14. It is not known how old her widower is.

Gynaecology expert Prof MD Aydan Biri told Hurriyet Daily News that the girl’s death was likely to have been caused by her going through childbirth at such a young age. He said: ‘It is dangerous for a child bride to get pregnant. The mortality rate is higher in adolescent pregnancies.
‘The risks of high blood pressure, early birth or an intervention in the birth are higher. The pregnancies of children who have not completed their physical development and whose organs have not yet completely developed often end in death.’
A third of girls in developing countries, excluding China, are forced to marry before they turn 18. One in seven is married before the age of 15.
