At least 19 people have died after a helicopter carrying oil workers crashed in northern Russia. Russia’s aviation agency has confirmed that all three crew members and 16 of the 19 passengers were killed in the crash on Friday.

The Mi-8 chopper was travelling from Vankor to Staryi Urengoi in the Yamalo-Nenets region when it came down about 28 miles north-east of its destination.

Fog and poor visibility meant it took rescuers seven hours to reach the site. Russia’s investigative committee has opened a criminal investigation into the accident to determine the cause.

The governor of the Yamalo-Nenets region declared a day of mourning on Saturday and described the accident a source of ‘great sorrow for all of us’.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has also expressed his condolences to the families and friends of those who died.
