A patient has died and a medic was injured after an ambulance exploded outside a hospital A&E. Dramatic pictures show the moment the vehicle was engulfed in flames just yards from Naas General Hospital in Co Kildare in Ireland.
A man in his 70s, who was inside the ambulance, died in the fire but the medic's condition was not believed to have been life-threatening. Gardai said the fire broke out at about 2pm and the emergency department was shut down following the blaze.
Witnesses reported hearing loud bangs and seeing thick black smoke amid fears the fire was going to spread to the building. One bystander told The Journal: 'The fire was outside the A&E entrance, they were bringing the patient into Casualty. The ambulance went up very fast. There were lots of bangs and explosions.'
