RIP Afeni Shakur...The Woman Who Protected The Legacy Of Her Beloved Son Tupac Shakur Has Tragically Passed

RIP: Afeni Shakur 1947-2016
Alice Faye Williams, aka Afeni Shakur, died this week at age 69, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Department. Though many may not know her name, people are bound to be familiar with Afeni’s son, legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, who was tragically murdered in the late 1990s.

Since her son’s death, the former Black Panther helped make sure his legacy endured in the twenty-odd years since his passing.

Mother and Son
In a 2003 interview with a Tupac fan site, Ms. Shakur explained that despite the love that came in from around the world for her son, she would always look at him as her little boy.

“I am never able to watch him as anything except my son. I am amazed, however, to observe how brilliant he was, because I know he came from me. And I’m like, ’Where’d that come from?’” she said.

“I’d like people to remember him as a complete artist. I would like for them to be touched and moved by his music and by his art. To judge him by the totality of his work. If they do that, it would be sufficient for me.”

She changed her name to Afeni Shakur when she joined the Black Panther movement. She and other party members were arrested in 1969 and charged with conspiracy to bomb multiple, busy city landmarks in a case where she defended herself (and was pregnant with Tupac at the time). In May 1971, she was acquitted on all charges and gave birth to 2Pac just one month later.
