Tragedy struck on Thursday [Mar 24] morning when a dilapidated building fell on a three-month old pregnant woman, identified as Mrs Kafayat Somoye and her five year-old daughter, Ganiyat, at Onifufu/Aderupaba compound, in Oke-Ijeun area of Abeokuta, killing them in the process.
The incident, Nigerian Tribune learnt occurred when the deceased woman was taking her children to school. The duo of Mrs Somoye and her daughter was unlucky when the building fell while the boy, Ganiyu narrowly escaped death.
It was gathered that Mrs Somoye was rescued alive from the rubble and eventually gave up the ghost while she was been taken to the General Hospital, Ijaye, for medical attention. The prompt intervention of police officers from Itoku and Ibara divisions prevented angry youths from setting the remaining building on fire.
An account linked the incident to the heavy rainfall that occurred on Wednesday night in the city. An eye witness, Tajudeen Badru, said the collapsed building had no sign of any structural defect before the incident happened. He said, “It happened early this morning as the woman was taking her child to the school, although we heard the girl is not her biological daughter, but there are two of them; the elder brother was ahead of the deceased.
“This building was still very intact as it gives no sign of collapsing but the heavy rain yester night might have caused this. It was a sudden occurrence, it was a woman who escaped from the incident that told us that people were trapped. We searched and rescued the woman without knowing that another person was under the rubble. We were later told that a young girl was also trapped and we equally searched and found her dead."
Attempt by the police to deposit the dead bodies at the morgue was vehemently rejected by family members while their remains were later released to the family for burial.
