A 22-year-old man, identified as Adebayo Hammed, has been remanded in prison for allegedly murdering one Onawo Samuel, a footballer, by stabbing him on the left side of his ribs with broken glass.
A Prosecutor, Inspector, Godwin Agoi, narrating how the suspect allegedly murdered the victim said the victim was an upcoming and successful footballer who was well known in the area and was about to join the under-20 national team until the ill fated encounter. According to him, Samuel who was well known in the area was passing through Oyemekun Bus stop, Agege when Adebayo, the accused, and others now at large stopped him and demanded money from him.
He said the touts who seemed to be familiar with him teased him about his growing up and pleaded with him to give them money since he was aware of their predicament and the country’s economic conditions, moreso, the fact that he was one of them before he became a well known footballer.
Agoi said the victim met his untimely death when he refused to give them money, telling them that he had no money on him. He said the suspect got angry and then pulled out a bottle stabbing Samuel on the left side of his ribs.
The Police alleged that the suspect confessed to stabbing the victim in the left side of his rib on the 15th of January.
Adebayo is facing a two count charge of murder and conspiracy before an Ebutte Metta Magistrate Court. The Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Ajibade ordered that the victim be remanded in Ikoyi Prison pending the Directorate of Public Prosecutions advice
She adjourned the matter till April 23, 2016.
