A young man in his mid-forties was on Friday [Dec. 11] reportedly killed in Benin City, capital of Edo state over revenue collection for Oredo local government council of the state.
This, according to an eyewitness, caused pandemonium along the busy Oba Market road as goods of traders selling along the road including some vehicles were destroyed by rival groups.
Consequently, this caused passers-by to scamper for safety as the rival groups fired gun shots into the air. It was learnt that quarrel ensued after a group claimed that the acting Chairman of Oredo Local Government, Sweet Ikpomwosa, gave them approval to collect revenue from night traders.
To this end, traders who displayed wares along the Oba Market road and adjoining streets were forced to pay as much as N600 daily to different groups. The group who were previously collecting revenue for the council was said to have resisted the new group which led to the killing.
