A police corporal attached to the Isheri-Oshun Police Station, Augustine Telenumdu, on Thursday [Sept. 17] shot a tricyclist and his wife, killing the latter in cold blood.
via THISDAY Reports:
While the tricyclist identified as Godwin Ekpo, is battling for his life at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, his wife, Ekaette Idongisiet Ekpo, on the other hand died on the spot. While Ekpo’s condition is still critical, THISDAY gathered that the deceased was shot through the back and the bullet pierced through the back of her head.
Telenumdu, with his four-man team made up of two other police corporals and a sergeant, had mounted an illegal stop-and-search operation at the Isheri-Osun area. Alongside others who were identified as Corporals Musefun Aremu and Onu Samuel, as well as Sergeant Benson Ababom, the suspect had accosted the tricyclist who was with his entire family.
They were said to be on their way home with their four children; Elizabeth, Mary and Abraham aged 12, seven and nine years respectively, as well as Elijah aged 11months. According to an eyewitness account, the corporal opened fire at the moving tricycle for refusing to part with the sum of N100 requested by the policemen, as was the norm.
Ekpo had refused to part with the said N100 because he was not on duty; rather he was going home from church. He was said to have opened fire at the tricycle, killing the deceased on the spot, while her husband narrowly escaped death.
Confirming the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the corporal had been arrested and would be charged for murder as soon as the ongoing Orderly room trial set up is concluded. He also revealed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Incharge of Isheri-Oshun Police Station as well as the entire police team had been queried for disobeying the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IG).
He said: “As soon as we heard of the incident, the command responded immediately. The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations has been with the husband of the deceased. In furtherance to the IG’s stand that we will not encourage any act of barbarism or misuse of fire arms, the Corporal has been arrested”. “Disciplinary action has been instituted. He will be charged to court for murder either today (Thursday) or tomorrow (Friday) to serve as deterrent to others.”
