|Kanayo, Kelechi and their son|
Ugochukwu Kelechi, 25, wants the police to help her recover her 2-year-old son whom she alleged was sold by her husband to pay his house rent in Lagos. The confused mother told Daily Trust that she got to know of the transaction, one year after the man sold the boy to an undisclosed person who resides in Port Harcourt, Rivers State for N300,000.
Though, the suspect, Kanayo Awurum, has since been arrested and is being detained at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of Lagos State police command, efforts are ongoing to arrest those who bought the little boy.
“I was impregnated by Kanayo two years ago when he came to the village for Christmas. He promised to marry me, but he later absconded when I told him that I was pregnant,” Kelechi said pitiably. “For two years, I was left in the cold by Kanayo who never asked me how we were fairing. He later resurfaced last December. He came to my house to apologise, saying that he never knew what came over him, he begged me to come to Lagos with him,” she narrated.
“I thought he had changed so we started our relationship again and he impregnated me again. While we were still in the village, he came to say he wanted to show his parents our son. I allowed him to go with our son; after all he is the boy’s father. Little did I know that he had perfected plans of how he was going to sell our son. He came back later without my son and when I inquired he said that our son will be living with his aunt, pending when we finally settle down,” she added.
Kelechi explained that it was while in Lagos that she became suspicious of everything following the series of excuses given to her each time she raised the issues concerning the whereabouts of her son. “It was after he was arrested that I got to know that he had sold our 2-year-old son for N300,000. He told the police that a friend of his facilitated the sale,” the troubled woman said.
Lagos State police spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, who confirmed the report, stated that police investigation revealed that Awurum, a painter, from Imo State, allegedly impregnated his girlfriend, Kelechi, and absconded shortly after. He said that investigations conducted by the officer-in-charge of SARS, Abba Kyari, also revealed that the suspect sold the boy without her knowledge.
Nwosu stated that the suspect came back and apologised to his girlfriend, prompting her to relocate to Lagos to meet the suspect who lives at Ikotun. “When he was eventually arrested, he claimed that one of his friends, whom he identified as Ibe Emmanuel, was the one who advised him to sell off the boy,” the spokesman said.
“During interrogation, he told the police team that Ibe was the one who went ahead to assist in looking for a buyer and found one in Port Harcourt where the boy, Chukwunonyerum Samuel, was allegedly sold to one Mrs. Chinwe for N300,000. He confessed to have given Ibe the sum of N50,000 for assisting in getting a buyer,” he added.
