Four men who allegedly gang-raped a 16-year-old girl were, on Thursday [Jun 25], arraigned in a Yaba Chief Magistrates' Court, Lagos State. The accused - Lekan Jimoh, 25; Tunde Ajayi, 20; Taiwo Awoniyi, 23, and Ojo Olayisoye, 18, are facing a charge of rape.
The prosecutor, ASP Godwin Anyanwu, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 12 at Egan-Igando in Lagos. Anyanwu said that the victim's mother sent her on an errand with N3,000.
"On her way, one of the accused, Jimoh, who usually disturbed the victim, stopped her and attacked her with the other three accused persons. Jimoh conspired with the other three accused persons to rape the 16-year-old girl. The accused persons covered her eyes with a cloth and carried her to a room," Anyanwu said.
According to the prosecutor, the accused threatened to stab the girl with a knife to force her to cooperate with them. He said that the offence contravened Section 258 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O Soladoye, ordered that the file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
Soladoye granted each of the accused N500,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case till August 3 for DPP's advice.
