No worries Lagos, Nigeria, you’re not the only ones Lauryn Hill is issuing apologies to this month.
Lauryn Hill took to her official Facebook page to serve an apology to her fans after canceling another show. Scheduled to perform at the Rishon Lezion Park Live Amphitheater on May 7th, Hill was faced with opposition to perform, thanks to a growing social media campaign asking artists to boycott performances in Israel.
The singer didn’t make use of the word ‘boycott’ in her apology, but did mention a “challenge” in performing.
Dear Friends and Fans in Israel,
When deciding to play the region, my intention was to perform in both Tel Aviv and Ramallah. Setting up a performance in the Palestinian Territory, at the same time as our show in Israel, proved to be a challenge. I’ve wanted very much to bring our live performance to this part of the world, but also to be a presence supporting justice and peace. It is very important to me that my presence or message not be misconstrued, or a source of alienation to either my Israeli or my Palestinian fans. For this reason, we have decided to cancel the upcoming performance in Israel, and seek a different strategy to bring my music to ALL of my fans in the region. May healing, equanimity, and the openness necessary for lasting resolution and reconciliation come to this region and its people.
Ms. Lauryn Hill
Human rights activists, namely the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) group, have since thanked Ms. Hill for her cancellation.
After not being able to make a show in Lagos, Nigeria Ms. Hill took to Facebook with a personal message to her fans. Assuring them that she would be there to perform on a later date, she explained that she had been at the airport for hours.
