The West African insurgent group, Boko Haram, on Wednesday [April 22] released new pictures, the first since pledging allegiance to ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The pictures, which were taken in an unknown location in what is supposedly a part of Northern Nigeria, depicts the jihadists posing in front of the terror group’s sinister black and white flag while brandishing assault rifles.

The photographs carry all the logos and artwork typically seen in official ISIS releases, suggesting the Middle East-based militants have taken full control of insurgents’ propaganda.

However, it is worth mentioning that these new pictures, the notorious leader of the group, Abubakar Shekau is noticeably absent. The new pictures were released just as the Nigerian military forces, backed by warplanes, invaded the insurgent’s last stronghold in the country – the Sambisa forest. They later retreated after landmines trapped hampered the advancement.

The group reportedly now refers to themselves as Wilayat al Sudan al Gharbi, which is commonly translated into English as the ‘West African Province’ of the Islamic State.

Last year the group released a video pledging their allegiance to ISIS. Until now, that was the last picture or video seen from the group. The timing of these pictures, if they are actually from boko haram, appears to be the last gasp of breath from a group believed to be nearing extinction.

Pledged allegiance: A Boko Haram militant casually poses in front of the Islamic State terror group's sinister black and white flag while brandishing an assault rifle
Influence: The slick photographs carry all the logos and artwork typically seen in official ISIS releases, suggesting the Middle East-based militants have taken full control of Boko Haram propaganda
Preparing for war: The fact Boko Haram have returned with little more than a series of group shots with amateur weapons is perhaps symptomatic of the group's rapid decline in influence over the past months
