AFENIFERE: No Regret…We Endorsed President Jonathan Because He Promised To Implement Report Of 2014 Constitutional Conference

The Yoruba socio-political association, Afenifere, on Thursday declared that it has no regret for endorsing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, in the March 28 election. The group, at a news conference in Akure, Ondo State capital, said Jonathan was endorsed due to his belief in the process of restructuring Nigeria with a promise to implement the recommendation of the 2014 Constitutional Conference.

Addressing journalists, the National Leader of Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, said Afenifere adopted Jonathan for the same reason that the group endorsed Muhammadu Buhari in 2007 when he contested for the same position.

Specifically, Fasoranti said the group endorsed Buhari when he contested in 2007 because he promised to convoke a National Conference. This came as the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Olu Falae, on Thursday urged the president-elect, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to implement the 2014 National Conference report on assumption of office.

Fasoranti declared that the group still believed in restructuring Nigeria, which is the main issue of the confab report. Fasoranti, who was flanked by the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Ou Falae, and the Afenifere Secretary, Chief Seinde Arogbofa, among other leaders, expressed the hope that Buhari would implement the recommendation of the confab in the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians.

“As he takes over the from May 29, 2015, we would like to remind him that we still stand by our perennial demand since the time of our leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, that to have peace and development, the country must be restructured among other things for fair play and justice, development for a sense of sense of belonging, opportunity for all to live happily together, enjoy gainful employment, have sound education, be accessible to good medical care and the need to be proud of our country.

“We also commend to him the implementation of the 2014 conference report which encapsulates most of our yearnings to get the issues raised carried out,” Fasoranti said.

While stating that the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Bola Tinubu, was an advocate of the constitutional conference before now, he said his (Tinubu) opposition to the confab was opportunistic politics.

Fasoranti said Afenifere would go to Abuja to engage Buhari and make him see reason to implement the recommendation of the conference for the benefits of all Nigerians and Nigeria as a country.

While congratulating Buhari for his success at the election and salute his doggedness, Fasoranti said Jonathan had laid a very strong foundation for democracy to thrive in Nigeria by conceding victory and not tampering with democratic principle. He said the president by his action had set a good example for other Nigerian leaders to emulate.
