Residents Notice Cracks In N2.5bn Kano Flyover

Cracks were yesterday [Mar. 24] noticed in the N2.5bn flyover bridge commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan in Kano on Saturday. Jonathan was in Kano on Saturday with top brass of the PDP, including the national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mua’azu, to commission the bridge which was constructed by Messrs Rocad Construction Limited at the cost of N2.4 billion.

Work at the bridge which was named by the President Jonathan after the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, was slow until three weeks ago when workers were mobilised to the site. Residents told our correspondents that major construction works on the bridge were done within two weeks in order to enable President Jonathan commission it before Saturday’s election.

The sharp crack was noticed around noon yesterday and motorists were barred from passing through the bridge. “It was while we were about to pass it that we were asked to turn back, that it has cracked. We rushed back and followed the other road,” a driver, Abdullahi Shuaibu, said.

The project which is one of the major projects of the federal government in Kano State was facilitated by Senator Bashir Garba Lado of the Kano central senatorial district. At the commissioning of the project, the PDP national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mua’zu, said it was better than the N5.9bn flyover bridge constructed by Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The spokesman of the construction company, Bashir Alhass an, however said the bridge had not cracked and that they had re-opened it.  “It was not a crack because of the time of completion of the bridge; we deliberately closed the bridge today (yesterday) to enable us work on the joints of the bridge. We suspended the work when people started shouting that that bridge had collapsed, it is the handiwork of politicians,” he said in a phone interview.
