JOHANNESBURG -- A South African
health official says they are recalling 1.35 million condoms given away at the
African National Congress party's centenary celebrations amid charges some
broke during intercourse and were porous.
AIDS activist Sello Mokhalipi
complained after scores of people came to his Treatment Action Campaign offices
saying the condoms burst.
He said they poured water into
condoms and "they leaked like sieves."
Provincial health department
spokesman Jabu Mbalula said Tuesday his department recalled the condoms to conduct
scientific tests.
He did not know how many have been
recovered since the recall two weeks ago. Tens of thousands of people attended
the celebrations.
South Africa has the highest number
of AIDS victims in the world.

This recall exposed the manufacturer's blunder of shipping low grade products to the African market. It is lamentable indeed.
